Epidaurus
Epidaurus is one of the most well known antique theatre in the world, it is well known for its near-perfect acoustics effects . Our tour guide has made a demonstration in the center of the theatre while we were sitting on the top of the theatre. She just spoken in a normal tone and we could still hear her clearly. No wonder, even it is in the middle of nowhere, a Annual Summer Music festival is held here every year.
Designed by Polykleitos in late 4th century BC, the theatre was restored recently and has a circular orchestra stage of 20 meter diameter for the performance. It as been survived from the ancient period.
The Asklepieion
Owing to the relatively remotness, the sanctuary of Epidauru was used as an extensive therapeutic and religious centre, dedicated to the healing of god Asklepios. Asklepios is a mortal physician defied by Zeus after his death for retrieving a patient from the underworld. Asklepios was depicted in his temple here clutching a staff and flanked by a dog and a serpent – common symbols of natural wisdom.
